Title: Ph.D., Sustainable thermoset based on biogenic material for a facile recyclable green composite system for high-performance applications (Technical University of Munich PhD)

Summary:

In this project, the focus is on the design and synthesis of novel thermosetting polymers with facile recycling, including smart new monomers that can bond and de-bond on demand, using energy-efficient processes such as reverse bonding and de-bonding. The key is the incorporation of suitable degradable functional groups or smart monomers into the polymers in their design stage,” design for recycling’’. The research will include the design and synthesis of new monomers including the use of bio-based raw materials, preparation of high-performance thermosets and investigating its structure-property relationships, chemical de-bonding, separation and recovery of building blocks, and proof of concept for “closed-loop” recycling. The novel polymer will be based on poly furfuryl alcohol (PFA). Cured PFA has excellent chemical resistance and fire retardant properties making it effective for long-term applications demanding high performance and heat resistance. Compared to other common resins, this highly stable resin offers a significant improvement in the carbon storage potential for green composites when used as a matrix. Furthermore, the research effort will be also directed towards the development of novel green recyclable composite systems with the desirable performance which can be recycled using chemical de-polymerization of the matrix and recovering the valuable fibers intact. The research activities will include understanding the performance profile, and matrix fiber surface interface of the new thermoset fiber reinforced composite, and characterizing the structure-property relationships utilizing various chemical, structural, rheological, mechanical, and surface characterization techniques.

Graphs are a fundamental data structure and are commonly used to model relationships between data points such as links between web pages or friendships between users in a social network. Due to the large variety in data science tasks performed with graph-structured data, different specialized systems have been developed, such as graph processing frameworks, graph databases, graph learning frameworks, knowledge graph systems, and graph mining systems. While each of them is specialized on a specific type of task and is highly efficient for it, maintaining and integrating a zoo of graph data systems is a huge challenge and leaves a lot of room for optimizations.

Our vision is to explore opportunities to unify core parts of the different types of systems and develop a core graph data system that can serve as a common building block. The research group “Biomolecular Quantum sensing” at the Technical University of Munich and member of the Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology (MCQST) is inviting applications for a Ph.D. or postdoctoral position. In recent years, spin defects in diamonds have been shown to act as atomic-sized sensors for nanoscale- microscopic magnetic field detection. One highly promising direction NV-based nano- and microscale nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In our lab, this quantum sensor based NMR spectroscocopy is applied to life sciences as well as chemistry and physics-based applications (www.bucherlab.org).

We are currently exploring two different directions with two open positions:

1) Surface NMR spectroscopy. Recently we have applied NV-centers for probing chemistry at surfaces and interfaces. We want to strengthen this research direction by i) developing a second generation of NV-based NMR spectrometer and ii) applying it to material/energy conversion and/or bioanalytical applications.
Qualifications. The highly motivated candidate should have expertise in solid-state NMR-, NQR-, EPR-spectroscopy or NV-quantum sensing and be interested in technology development.

2) Single-cell NMR spectroscopy. Our group aims to develop NV-based NMR spectroscopy on the single-cell level within an ERC starting grant. In order to achieve the necessary sensitivities, i) hyperpolarization methods must be applied, and the NV-NMR detection must be improved. In the project, these technological developments will be combined with applications in single-cell biology.

We are affiliated with the faculties of medicine and computer science at TUM, as well as the Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML). It is a great place for interdisciplinary research between medicine and data science. We are looking for a Post-Doc (TVL E13) to join our team.

Medical images provide wide opportunities for studying diseases. Yet, images alone are often not sufficient but the integration of adjunct data sources is required to create a holistic picture. Such additional information can improve the performance, help to reveal biases, or may enable to perform causal inference. We are interested in developing statistical models and neural networks that handle the many challenges of integrating such complex medical data sources on large-scale studies and the translation to clinical practice.

Your tasks:
Graphs are a fundamental data structure and are commonly used to model relationships between data points such as links between web pages or friendships between users in a social network. Due to the large variety in data science tasks performed with graph-structured data, different specialized systems have been developed, such as graph processing frameworks, graph databases, graph learning frameworks, knowledge graph systems, and graph mining systems. While each of them is specialized on a specific type of task and is highly efficient for it, maintaining and integrating a zoo of graph data systems is a huge challenge and leaves a lot of room for optimizations.

Our vision is to explore opportunities to unify core parts of the different types of systems and develop a core graph data system that can serve as a common building block. This way, redundancies in keeping multiple cop-ies of graph data in different systems could be reduced, maintenance of the systems could be improved, and operational costs could be optimized. To perform this exciting research, we are looking for a highly motivated student or PostDoc who has recently finished his/her Master’s degree or PhD degree in computer science.
