Research topic

Addressing the problem of school disengagement is of great importance. In Australia, school disengagement is a ‘hidden crisis,’ and the problem is even deeper among refugee youth such as those from African backgrounds. Educationally disengaged youth are at greater risk of unemployment, poverty, risky health behaviours, and social withdrawal. This PhD project is part of a larger Australian Research Council (ARC) funded four-year Future Fellowship project investigating the issue of school engagement among African heritage students from refugee backgrounds. The Future Fellowship project aims to advance an innovative approach to understanding and improving school engagement of refugee students. The findings of the project will:

Inform policy, school practices, and community services.
Enhance the educational attainment of refugee students.
Make a theoretical contribution to equity research in the sociology of education.

The PhD project associated with this Future Fellowship will investigate school engagement among refugee students. The candidate can choose one or more of the fellowship’s five interactive inquiry domains. These are sectoral policies, school practices, biographical contexts of students, parental engagement, and community-based educational services. The PhD project may involve interviewing students and their parents, visiting schools, and reviewing relevant policy documents. The exact nature of the PhD project will be developed in consultation with supervisors Dr Tebeje Molla and Prof Amanda Keddie. The PhD will provide opportunities for the candidate to present and publish with the principal supervisor Dr Tebeje Molla as part of the project outcomes. This research is partially funded by the Australian Government through the Australian Research Council.

Soil ecosystems are crucial for sustaining agricultural industries upon which food security and financial stability depend. The interactions between biological communities and physio-chemical variables contribute to the overall quality of the soil. Textile waste ending up in landfills has adverse effects on soil quality by causing changes to both biotic (soil organic matter and organisms) and abiotic variables (soil nutrients, metal pollutants, and soil structure). In Australia, 23 Kg out of the consumed 27 Kg of textile person ends in landfills. Innately, the material, finishing, and dyes that constitute these textile waste impacts the cycling of essential nutrients and plant growth and can act as or protect other organisms from pathogens. Hence, there is a potential to return this textile waste to fields to offer benefits to soil health that could be a scalable solution to this massive landfill problem.

Plants are complex biological systems whose functional drive (flux, nutrient transport) is often quantified by the appearance of a structure (leaf, flower). Morphological transformations in a plant indicate signalling, defence, and growth mechanism, which is highly influenced by soil characteristics and climate. Microorganism activity, nutrient solubility, and availability are some of the critical processes that inherently depend on soil characteristics. For instance, reactive oxygen species (ROS) present in the soil play a vital role in cellular homeostasis, which controls plant metabolism, growth and development, adaptation, and suicide events. Another critical variable is the pH of the soil; in acidic soil, most micronutrients are more available to plants than in neutral alkaline soil, which generally favours plant growth. Conversely, lower availability of micronutrients will adversely affect plant growth. Therefore, this project aims to address the need for a systematic investigation of the impacts of textile landfill on soil characteristics concerning plant growth.

Research topic

This research is part of an ARC Discovery grant that will analyse the intergroup relations between different ethnic and religious Australian communities from Turkey and India. It will analyse the perspectives of different groups such as Islamists, secularists, Sunni Muslims, Alevis, Kurds, Hindus, Indian Muslims and Sikhs. Interviews will be conducted with the members of these groups to better understand their mutual perceptions and their views about intergroup relations, politics and society of Turkey, India and Australia.

The PhD candidate will work with Prof Ihsan Yilmaz, Dr Priya Chacko and Dr Ana-Maria Bliuc to conduct research on civilizational populism and transnational political mobilization through digital technologies, with a focus on the Indian diaspora in Australia.

The candidate is strongly encouraged to consider the relationship between offline and online environments.

Deakin University recognises that women remain under-represented in Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture and Maths (STEAM) – including our Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) and academic cohorts. Deakin is committed to Gender equity, diversity and inclusion, and is an active participant in the SAGE Athena SWAN program. To help promote long term change, we are offering multiple Women in STEAM PhD scholarships to support females who are seeking the opportunity to study a PhD and work on a research project supervised by at least one female academic.

These scholarships are available to prospective female domestic and (Australian and New Zealand Citizens and Australian permanent residents) and International offshore and onshore (currently in Australia) applicants to conduct a research project with an academic supervisory team in any discipline area across the Schools and Research Centres of the Faculty of Science, Engineering & Built Environment. Additional funds may be available to support fieldwork, conference or collaborative travel during candidature.
