Summary:

The Cybersecurity and AI Group at Freie Universität Berlin, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Gerhard Wunder and supported by Bundesdruckerei GmbH, focuses on AI, Deep Learning, and Information Theory for Security, Privacy, and Identity. The group is currently seeking an outstanding PhD candidate specializing in trustworthy Large Language Models (LLMs), with a strong emphasis on Explainability, Causality, and Watermarking of LLMs. This position is part of the new BMBF initiative “Chances and Risks of Generative AI,” led by Fraunhofer AISEC and carried out in collaboration with CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security and TU Berlin until the end of 2026. The PhD candidate will contribute to the theoretical foundations, design, and implementation of Trustworthy LLMs, collaborating closely with partners in the consortium. Candidates are expected to co-author articles published in high-quality academic venues such as IEEE/ACM conferences and journals. The position offers the opportunity to write a doctoral thesis within the framework of the externally funded research project.

Requirements:

Applicants must hold a completed scientific degree (master’s or equivalent) in computer science, mathematics, electrical engineering, or a related field.

Desirable:

  • Profound theoretical knowledge in AI, Deep Learning, and proficient coding skills in Python, TensorFlow (or PyTorch), as well as familiarity with project management tools (Git, etc.).
  • Experience in implementing and training LLMs, Prompt Engineering, and RAG is advantageous.
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate with group members and the project consortium will be highly valued.
