The Institute for Advanced Study is a private, independent research and education institution in Princeton, New Jersey. It was founded as an independent academic institution on October 2, 1930, by American mathematician and philanthropist Oswald Veblen.

Available Academic Positions in School of Natural Sciences of Institute for Advanced Study

The School of Natural Sciences will have several openings for members for the academic year 2022-2023. The positions are at a postdoctoral or higher level in the areas of theoretical astrophysics, biology, cosmology, mathematical physics, quantum field theory, particle phenomenology, string theory and quantum gravity. Members are selected on their ability to conduct independent research and are free to work full-time on problems in which they are interested. The Institute program is closely integrated with the corresponding activities at Princeton University via joint seminars, lunches, and frequent informal contacts. In any given year, some of the members will collaborate with each other, with relevant Institute faculty members, with scientists at other institutions, or with faculty at nearby Princeton, Rutgers or the Flatiron Institute and other universities in New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.

Appointments are typically for three years with full stipend support. We aim to provide Members with an environment where they can achieve their maximum scientific potential. For Members who are still in their scientifically formative years, this environment includes the mentoring needed to enable them to become future leaders. We offer competitive stipends, eligibility for on-campus housing, and other professional resources.

Title: Long-term (5 year) Members Fellow at Institute for Advanced Study

All postdoctoral applicants are considered for a few memberships offered to candidates of exceptional promise and scientific maturity. The stipend is above post-doctoral level and is commensurate with qualifications. In addition to exceptional qualifications for pursuing his or her individual research, the successful candidate for a long-term membership should be interested in talking to, and possibly collaborating with, other post-doctoral members.

Title: Bahcall Fellows to support five-year appointments for outstanding postdoctoral scholars at Institute for Advanced Study

John Bahcall (1934 – 2005) was a faculty member at the Institute for Advanced Study from 1971 until his death. He made fundamental contributions to astronomy and astrophysics in subjects ranging from solar neutrinos to galactic structure, quasars, and cosmology, and established at the Institute a world-leading postdoctoral program in astrophysics. Among his many other activities, he was a tireless advocate of the Hubble Space Telescope, chaired the National Research Council’s decadal survey in astronomy and astrophysics for the 1990’s and served as President of the American Astronomical Society from 1990-1992.

To commemorate Bahcall’s achievements, the Institute has established the John Bahcall Fellowships to support five-year appointments for outstanding postdoctoral scholars at the Institute. These Fellowships are a tribute to John’s achievements, to his love of science and his colleagues, and to his high standards of excellence in research. Applicants should hold a faculty or equivalent position and should be within ten years of receiving their Ph.D. Support will be provided to spend a period between one term and one year at the Institute. Visiting Professors are expected to conduct their own research and to help make the research environment at the IAS stimulating to the other Members of the school.

Summary: Prospects in Theoretical Physics is an intensive two-week summer program typically designed for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars considering a career in theoretical physics (for 2014 only the program was one week in length). First held by the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study in the summer of 2002, the PiTP program is designed to provide lectures and informal sessions on the latest advances and open questions in various areas of theoretical physics.

The goal of the program is for the School of Natural Science at IAS, which mainly focuses in the training of postdoctoral fellows, to contribute in a small way to the training of graduate students as well. A special effort is made to reach out to women and minorities, as well as to graduate students coming from institutions with smaller graduate programs in theoretical science. This scheme is, for the most part, separate from the IAS Fellowship scheme and makes it possible for a small number of visiting scholars to spend usually one term in Durham during the academic year. Fellowships are usually restricted to academic terms. In most cases, it is only possible for the college to accommodate the Visiting Fellow, although it may be possible in certain circumstances to accommodate a partner/spouse. The availability of Visiting College Fellowships remains at the discretion of the college and Fellowship vacancies may be subject to change at short notice.
