What is Newton Fellowship?

In 2008 Newton Fellowship was started to support young international scientists in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities to start their academic careers in the UK. Indeed, the main goal of the Newton Fellowship is to ensure the best scientists across all relevant disciplines of natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities from around the world are sponsored in the UK.

Nowadays, Newton Fellowship is available by the Royal Society and British Academy. The applicants of social science and humanities should apply to the British Academy.

The goal of the Newton Fellowship

Young international researchers are targeted by this program. This scheme aims to support postdoctoral researchers at an early stage of their career from countries outside the UK by providing an opportunity to work at a UK research institution for two years. In order to ensure the best postdoctoral researchers from around the world are supported in the UK, we must ensure that they are recruited from all relevant disciplines. By establishing an alumni programme for former Newton International Fellows, we intend to foster long-term relations between Newton International Fellows and the UK research community. To maintain and develop links with UK-based researchers, the alumni programme may provide further funding for follow-on activities for Newton International Fellows.

Who are eligible to apply to Newton Fellowship?

There are some requirements to apply Newton Fellowship:

  1. The candidates should be international students (non-UK students) and working outside the UK
  2. The candidates should be at their early stage of postdoctoral (no more than 7 years of active full-time postdoctoral experience at the time of application)
  3. The candidates should have a PhD (have a PhD by the time the funding starts)
  4. The candidates should have a clearly defined and mutually beneficial research proposal (It should be agreed upon with a UK host scientist)
  5. The candidates have good oral and written English skills.

What is the value of this Fellowship?

Newton Fellowship will cover all living costs during the two years of postdoctoral research in the UK. The successful researcher will receive a fixed rate of £24,000 per annum as well as research (up to £8,000 per annum for consumables) and relocation expenses (a one-off payment of up to £3,500 for relocation expenses in year one only) and the visa costs of applicants and their dependents.

The deadline date

There are various deadlines for the Newton Fellowship and could be varied at different years.

Deadline of 2021: 16 June 2021

Duration

Newton International Fellowships last for two years, on a full-time basis. However, you have the opportunity to choose a part-time basis (minimum 0.6FTE) if you have caring responsibilities.

Newton International Fellowships should be started by 30 June and cannot start before 01 January.

What is the Application Process for the Newton Fellowship?

There are two different platforms for applying online. The researchers in the fields of humanities and social sciences should apply to the British Academy and the scientists in the fields of the natural and physical sciences should be submitted through the Royal Society’s grants management system Flexi-Grant®.
