The main goal of the International Fellowship of Cancer Research Institute is to support and train the gift young scientists in the field of basic and tumor immunology and consequently improve cancer treatment methods to save lives worldwide at top universities and research centers around the world.

It should be noted that Lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach, and liver cancer are the most common types of cancer in men, while breast, colorectal, lung, cervical, and thyroid cancer are the most common among women. However, this institute has different various supporting Fellowships for researching rare Cancer types. For instance, The Cancer Research Institute in collaboration with the Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation has founded some other Fellowships in the projects of understanding the immunological response to fibrolamellar carcinoma and accelerating the development of effective immunotherapy treatments for this rare, aggressive liver cancer that occurs predominantly in otherwise healthy adolescents and young adults.

Title: Postdoctoral Fellowship to Promote Racial Diversity

Application Deadline: March 1; September 1

Summary:

The CRI Irvington Postdoctoral Fellowship to Promote Racial Diversity supports qualified young scientists at leading universities and research centers around the world who wish to receive training in fundamental immunology or cancer immunology.

CRI seeks hypothesis-driven, mechanistic studies in both immunology and tumor immunology that aim to directly impact our understanding of the immune system’s role in cancer.

A panel of scientists drawn from the CRI Scientific Advisory Council will rigorously evaluate each candidate, the intended sponsor and training environment, and the nature and feasibility of the proposed project.

Eligibility:

The program is open to candidates who identify as Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino/a American, or American Indian or Alaska Native.
To be eligible, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen working at a nonprofit institution in the United States or abroad.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree and be working in areas directly related to immunology or cancer immunology.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree by the date of award activation and must conduct their proposed research under a sponsor who holds a formal appointment as an assistant professor or higher rank at the host institution.
Applicants with 5 or more years of relevant postdoctoral experience at the time of award activation are not eligible, with the exception of M.D. applicants, who should not include years of residency in this calculation.
Only in exceptional circumstances will applicants who have already spent 3 or more years in a sponsor’s laboratory by the start date of fellowship be considered for a fellowship award.
The fellowship can be performed in the United States or abroad, but must take place at a non-profit institution.
Only one fellow per sponsor may apply per application round, and faculty sponsors may not have more than three CRI-supported fellows at any time.

Financial Information:

Newly awarded fellowships provide a stipend of $55,000 for the first year, $57,000 for the second year, and $59,000 for the third year. Beginning January 2022, an allowance of $5,000 per year is allotted to the host institution for use at the sponsor’s discretion to help pay for the fellow’s research supplies, travel to scientific meetings, health insurance, and/or childcare.

Deductions for administrative overhead are not allowed from either the stipend or the institutional allowance. Payments are made monthly in U.S. currency to the host institution.

Title: Clinic & Laboratory Integration Program (CLIP)

Summary:

The Cancer Research Institute established Clinic and Laboratory Integration Program to support investigators who are studying critical topics at the intersection of laboratory and clinical research in immuno-oncology. CLIP grants provide up to $200,000 over a two-year period.

Eligibility:

CLIP Grants provide funding for qualified scientists who are working to explore clinically relevant questions aimed at improving the effectiveness of cancer immunotherapies. The grant will support pre-clinical and translational research, which will provide information that can be directly applied to optimizing cancer immunotherapy in the clinic.

Candidates for a CLIP Grant must hold a faculty appointment as a tenure-track assistant professor (or higher rank) at the time of award activation. If not, documentation from their institution must accompany the Letter of Intent indicating they will hold the position of assistant professor (or higher rank) by the time of award activation. CRI has no citizenship restrictions, and research supported by the award may be conducted at medical schools and research centers in the United States or abroad. Please note that CLIP Grants do not support research at for-profit institutions.

Title: LLOYD J. OLD STAR PROGRAM

Application Deadline: January 15

Summary:

The Lloyd J. Old STAR Program provides grants of $1.25 million over 5 years to mid-career scientists. This long-term funding is not be tied to a specific research project, but rather aims to provide a degree of flexibility and freedom for investigators to explore outside-the-box and disruptive avenues of research. Candidates selected for this award are expected to be future “stars” in the field of cancer immunology: Scientists TAking Risks.

Eligibility:

Candidates for the Lloyd J. Old STAR program must meet the following eligibility requirements:

The applicant must have an M.D., Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D. (or equivalent)
Applicants must belong to one of the following categories as of July 1, 2023:
- Tenure-track assistant professor with a minimum of 3 years in this position (appointed on or before July 1, 2020)
- Tenure-track associate professor with a maximum of 3 years in this position (appointed on or after July 1, 2020)

Adjunct or acting positions are not eligible.

Applicants are expected to commit a minimum of 80% of their time to conducting research.

CRI has no citizenship restrictions, and research supported by the award may be conducted at medical schools and research centers in the United States or abroad. Please note that the Cancer Research Institute does not support research at for-profit institutions.

Title: TECHNOLOGY IMPACT AWARD

LOI Deadline: November 15

The Cancer Research Institute Technology Impact Award provides seed funding of up to $200,000 to be used over 12-24 months to address the gap between technology development and clinical application of cancer immunotherapies. These grants aim to encourage collaboration between technology developers and clinical cancer immunologists and to generate the proof-of-principle of a novel platform technology in bioinformatics, ex vivo or in silico modeling systems, immunological or tumor profiling instrumentation, methods, reagents and assays, or other relevant technologies that can enable clinician scientists to generate deeper insights into the mechanisms of action of effective or ineffective cancer immunotherapies.

Award winners will be selected based on the novelty, creativity, technical sophistication, and transformative potential of the technology to impact cancer immunotherapy research around the world. The ultimate aim of this program is to advance technologies that can speed up the entire field’s efforts in addressing one of the most defining challenges of our time—developing immunotherapies that are effective for all cancer patients.

OVERVIEW:

The most competitive applicants will address areas where technological innovation stands to benefit the field and cancer patients most, and that will ultimately lead to effective next generation cancer immunotherapies. These technologies may include but are not limited to:

New bioinformatics methods or technologies that speed collection and analysis of large sets of patient-derived biological data
Computer simulations for modeling biological systems and responses to immunotherapy
Tools and methods that improve profiling of tumors to inform therapeutic strategies
Real-time visualizations of molecular and cellular activity to improve tracking of responses to immunotherapy
In vitro tissue culture systems that recapitulate the interactions between primary tumor cells and the immune system

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must hold a faculty appointment as a tenure-track assistant professor (or higher rank) at the time of award activation. If not, documentation from their institution must accompany the Letter of Intent indicating they will hold the position of assistant professor (or higher rank) by the time of award activation.
The grant will be awarded to a scientist who describes an extraordinarily novel, yet practical research plan that is creative and technically sophisticated.
Joint submissions from collaborators will also be considered. (The collaborators will share the award.) Each collaborator must meet the eligibility criteria.
Selected projects that meet their 12 and 24 month milestones may be eligible for follow-on funding that will enable the established proof-of-concept technology to be developed into a methodology that improves cancer immunotherapy research worldwide.
