Heidelberg University

Heidelberg University is a public research university, officially known as the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg. Heidelberg University was founded in 1386 at the instruction of Pope Urban VI, making it one of the oldest surviving universities in the world. In the Holy Roman Empire, it was the third university to be established.

Since 1899, Heidelberg has been a co-educational institution. The university offers degree programs in more than 100 disciplines at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels. Heidelberg has three campuses: Old Town houses the humanities, Neuenheimer Feld houses the natural sciences and medicine, and Bergheim houses the social sciences. German is usually the language of instruction, but English and French are also used in a number of graduate programs.

Available Fully Funded PhD and Academic Vacancies at Heidelberg University in Germany

The following is a list of all PhD and Academic Vacancies currently available at Heidelberg University in Germany that are fully funded. We will update this post on a regular basis.

Location: The Institute of Organic Chemistry

Salary: The salary is based on TV-L scale (E13). The position is limited to three years, with the possibility of extension.

Deadline: 30.04.2024

Summary:

2 PhD Positions (65%) in Organic Chemistry – Synthesis of Polycyclic Aromatic Nanobelts (f/m/d)

The project, TACY (Tackling the Cyclacene Challenge), is a collaboration between the research groups of Michael Mastalerz (Heidelberg University), Holger Bettinger (University Tübingen), and Michael Gottfried (University of Marburg), supported by an ERC Synergy Grant initiated in April 2023. The objective is to synthesize cyclacenes, a class of cyclic aromatic compounds proposed by Heilbronner in 1954 but still unattained. Through a multidisciplinary approach combining synthesis, matrix isolation, on-surface synthesis, and theoretical calculations, the TACY team aims to address this long-standing challenge.

Requirements:

  • Candidates should be proficient in experimental techniques, ideally with experience in multi-step organic synthesis, holding a Master’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry.
  • Prior experience with fused aromatic compounds is advantageous.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required, as the project communication is conducted in English.

Situated within the nuclear envelope (NE), the NPC facilitates the transport of RNA and proteins between the nucleus and cytoplasm. The project aims to investigate NPC biogenesis using budding yeast and human cells as model systems. The PhD student will utilize biochemical techniques, super-resolution microscopy, electron microscopy, CRISPR/Cas9 technology, and live cell imaging to study NPC assembly.

Requirements:

Candidates should possess a strong background in biochemistry, cell biology, or molecular biology. Previous experience with biochemical techniques and imaging methods is desirable. The successful candidate will join an international team of PhD students and postdocs working at the forefront of scientific research.
