The #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship program recognizes international students who have a vision for enhancing intercultural understanding. George Mason University is awarding two scholarships for Fall 2022. The scholarship is open to first-year undergraduate international students of all academic majors and fields of study, and it is applied to tuition costs

A #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship covers a minimum of 50% tuition for the first year of study and is renewable for the second year of study as long the student continues to be in good academic standing. The scholarship cannot be combined with other merit awards.
Eligibility:
Eligible students are those who are applying to George Mason University as first-year undergraduate international student starting in the fall semester. All academic majors are welcome to apply. International applicant is an individual who holds citizenship in a country outside the U.​S.​ and who does not also possess U.​S.​ citizenship or permanent residency.

Title: Freshman scholarships (gmu scholarships)
Mason awards millions of dollars in scholarships to incoming freshmen every year. These awards not only recognize strong academic talent and achievement, but also special talents and other personal characteristics, without regard to an applicant’s financial need. Most Mason scholarships require full time enrollment and are not pro-rated based on reduced enrollment loads.
Deadline: All freshman applicants who apply by November 1 (the Early Action application deadline) will automatically be considered for merit-based scholarships through the Office of Admissions and the Scholarship Committee. Students who apply Early Action are notified of their admissions decisions by mid-December, and the Scholarship Committee notifies students if they were awarded a scholarship no later than February.
Freshman General Admission Requirements:
The following factors are evaluated in the decision process:
- Cumulative high school grade point average (GPA) for work completed in grades 9-12 along with level of difficulty of courses selected, particularly in core academic courses. Request your high school send an official copy of your transcript.
- SAT or ACT Scores. You have the option to submit ACT or SAT scores with your application, or you may apply Score Optional. If you decide to apply with ACT or SAT scores, George Mason University will use the self-reported SAT and/or ACT test scores as part of our holistic admissions process. However, an admission decision will then be contingent upon receipt of official test scores, sent directly from the testing agency, prior to the first day of classes for the semester in which the student intends to enroll. The Office of Admissions reserves the right to reevaluate an applicant’s admissions or scholarship decision upon receipt of official test scores. This reevaluation may result in a change of admissions or scholarship status. More information on Score Optional Consideration is available below on this page.
- Applicants may also apply as Score Optional if they meet the requirements (see below).
- Secondary School Report and counselor recommendations. We suggest sending two (2) letters of recommendation, one from your high school counselor and one from a teacher. The Common Application provides a section for uploading letters of recommendation. For George Mason University’s Undergraduate Application for Admission, there is no special recommendation form and letters can be submitted electronically or via e-mail. (If you have been out of school for more than five years, this is not necessary.)
- An optional, but strongly encouraged Personal Statement of approximately 250 words explaining to the Office of Admissions why YOU want to go to college. Tell us about yourself and your experiences that have led to this decision. Submit your statement online when prompted during the online application process or within the Common App.
- Non-native English-speaking applicants are required to meet the University’s English proficiency requirement Applicants who will have completed four years (grades 9-12) of college preparatory English (excluding ESL and remedial English courses) at a U.​S.​ secondary school, excluding Puerto Rico, with grades of C or better in each course satisfy the requirement. Title: Mason Foundation Scholarships (gmu scholarships)
Mason Foundation Scholarships for incoming freshmen attending fall semester require no separate scholarship application. Awards are open to admitted students who have confirmed their acceptance through a tuition deposit. Scholarship awards based on a combination of merit, need and availability. Some foundation scholarships are renewable provided students maintain eligibility by completing their requirements and may not be available for the current incoming class.

The George Mason University Alumni Association Student Scholars (gmu scholarships)
The George Mason University Alumni Association sponsors six (6) student scholarships each year. Scholarship applications open during the fall semester and are selected in the spring semester each year. The scholarship award is applied to tuition for the following fall semester. All scholarships awarded are $2,500. The available scholarships and requirements are listed below.
Title: Peter C. Forame Student Leader Scholarship (gmu scholarships)
The Peter C. Forame Student Leader Scholarship was established by the friends and classmates of First Lieutenant Peter C. Forame after he died in action during the Vietnam War. Mr. Forame was a past president of student government at George Mason University who possessed outstanding academic and leadership skills. His involvement exemplified that of a well-rounded student who balanced the demands of academic life with those of extracurricular activities. The George Mason University Alumni Association endowed the scholarship in 1995 so it could be awarded to deserving student leaders who demonstrate the ability to excel academically and still participate actively in university life.

Title: Black Scholars Endowed Scholarship (gmu scholarships)
The Black Scholars Endowed Scholarship was established by the Black Alumni Chapter of George Mason University in 2011 to provide funding for undergraduate students from an underrepresented student population with first preference to Black/African Heritage students. The scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student who has completed at least one course within the African-American Studies minor; or has been an active or contributing member of a George Mason University student organization that promotes the advocacy and support of Black/African Heritage students.

• Full-time undergraduate student (taking at least 12 credits)

Title: John C. and Louise P. Wood Graduate Scholarship (gmu scholarships)
The John C. and Louise P. Wood Graduate Scholarship was established in 1975 by the late John C. Wood. Mr. Wood overcame the challenges of blindness to serve as the mayor of the City of Fairfax from 1952 to 1963 and to become the first rector of the George Mason University Board of Visitors. Mr. Wood was instrumental in the development of George Mason University as an institution of higher learning in Northern Virginia and in the acquisition of the land for the Fairfax Campus and the School of Law. The Wood Graduate Scholarship is awarded annually to a student that demonstrates unusual motivation and ability in the pursuit of education and who has contributed to the development and welfare of George Mason University and/or the greater community.

Title: The 50th Anniversary Scholarship (gmu scholarships)
In 1968, the graduating students of George Mason College had the foresight to create an organization designed to support and advocate for the University as a lifelong commitment. In 2018, in recognition of this milestone, the 50th Anniversary Scholarship was established to honor and recognize the contributions that alumni leaders have given the University and community.
This scholarship will award essential funds to a student each year who embodies the ideal of dedicated alumni leaders: Service, Diversity, and Philanthropy.

Title: Chandran J. Shukla Endowed Fellowship (gmu scholarships)
The Chandran J. Shukla Fellowship was established by Jagadish and Anne Shukla in memory of their son. The purpose of the Fellowship is to assist graduate students pursuing a degree in Climate Dynamics. The recipient may be either an in-state or out of state student. The Fellowship is based on a combination of academic merit and financial need. The Shuklas and a few other faculty members, have endowed the Fellowship with enough funds to support expenditures of about $1000 per year.
The Fellowship may be used to help one or more students purchase computer hardware or software, books or journal subscriptions, and other academic supplies; to enable students to attend scientific conferences and meetings; to support registration fees, travel-related expenses, and educational and research activities, including lectures; to provide direct student support such as stipend funding or tuition waiver; and to organize a Journal Club for all Climate Dynamics graduate students. The Fellowship is renewable.
Students are encouraged to submit proposals for funding under the Fellowship. Proposals may be submitted by individuals or groups of students. Decisions on funding the proposals will be made by representatives of GMU based on the merit of the proposals and on the availability of funds. For best chances of funding, students should submit proposals by October 1 to Barry Klinger, via email.
