Title: Churchill Scholarship (Yale PhD)

Churchill Scholarships support one-year graduate degree courses at the University of Cambridge in engineering, mathematics, or the sciences: see the official website for a list of eligible programs of study. The award provides payment of all university and college tuition fees at Cambridge, a maintenance allowance, and a travel allowance.

The Churchill Foundation currently offers at least fifteen scholarships each year. Yale is invited to nominate two candidates to the national competition; the campus nomination process is coordinated through Fellowship Programs at the Yale College Center for International & Professional Experience.

Title: Henry Fellowship (Yale PhD)

The Charles and Julia Henry Fund supports one year of postgraduate study at Oxford or Cambridge and is not renewable. The award provides tuition, approved fees, a cost of living stipend, and a transatlantic travel grant. (Yale PhD)

In 2021 Yale will select two graduating seniors as Henry Fellows.  The application process is coordinated through Fellowship Programs at the Yale Center for International & Professional Experience.

Special Eligibility Requirements (Yale PhD):

Eligible are students who will have received a Yale bachelor’s degree by the beginning of the immediately following academic year. Very strong preference is given to graduating seniors.

US and non-US citizens are eligible to apply.

Candidates must submit evidence of distinction in some recognized branch of learning; a high academic standard is required. In addition, candidates must present a definite plan of study or research to be carried out, and the proposed work must fall within the university facilities available at Oxford or Cambridge. The choice of subject of study is unrestricted, provided it meets with the approval of the British university that the Henry Fellow will attend. The Committee will consider only those candidates who will not receive additional financial assistance and who are prepared to give their whole time to the purpose of the Henry Fellowship, i.e., study, active participation in the social and extracurricular life of the college in addition to academic work, and travel.

Title: Marshall Scholarship (Yale PhD)

Founded by a 1953 Act of Parliament and named in honor of US Secretary of State George C. Marshall, the Marshall Scholarships commemorate the humane ideals of the European Recovery Programme (Marshall Plan) instituted in 1947, and they express the continuing gratitude of the British people to their American counterparts. It is hoped that as future leaders, with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars will strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments, and their institutions.

Up to fifty Marshall Scholarships are awarded annually to U.S. citizens for post-graduate study in almost any discipline leading to the award of a British university degree. Traditional Marshall Scholarships are for two years of study. A limited number of One Year Scholarships are also available (for degree programs of 11 or 12 months’ duration; shorter one-year degree programs are ineligible for the One Year Marshall, but may be pursued as part of a Traditional two-year Marshall).

Special Eligibility Requirements (Yale PhD):

Candidates must be US citizens at the time of application. For the awards tenable from October 2022, eligible candidates must have graduated from their undergraduate institutions after April 2019.

The Marshall “Rules for Candidates” describe the qualities that selection committees seek in Marshall Scholars:

“In appointing Scholars the Selectors will look for candidates who have the potential to excel as scholars, as leaders and as contributors to improved UK-US understanding. Assessment will be based on academic merit, leadership potential and ambassadorial potential. Preference will be given to candidates who display a potential to make a significant contribution to their own society. Selectors will also look for strong motivation and seriousness of purpose, including the presentation of a specific and realistic academic programme. Selectors will also be looking for a strong post-scholarship plan.”

Applicants must have at least a 3.7 cumulative undergraduate grade point average, without rounding up.

Title: King’s-Yale Fellowship (Yale PhD)

The King’s-Yale Fellowship will support a candidate who, on completion of their undergraduate degree, wishes to study for a one-year full-time Master’s course in any subject (with the exception of MBA) at King’s College in the University of Cambridge.  The award will cover tuition, room and board, settling-in fee, and a travel and conference allowance.

The candidate must articulate an interest in, and commitment to, pursuing academic research to the highest standard and outline how they will benefit from engaging in further study of their chosen subject. The candidate must have demonstrated through their aptitude, demeanor and academic results the potential to continue to a doctorate or other higher degree in their subject.

The candidate must apply for a place on any 1 year Master’s course offered by the University of Cambridge, and meet the criteria set by the admitting department or faculty. All 1 year Master’s courses existing at the time of application are eligible for support from the studentship.

Title: Paul Mellon Fellowship (Yale PhD)

Fellowships are offered to two members of the Senior Class in Yale College for study at Clare College, Cambridge, for the coming academic year. Fellowship recipients may request a second or third year depending on their academic program (see more below).

An Applicant

1. Must demonstrate a genuine interest in Britain or in subjects that can best be approached by study in England.
2. Must agree that in the summer following their first year at Clare College they will devote some time to travel in the British Isles or on the Continent, and will not ordinarily expect to return to the United States during that time.
3. Must have a strong academic record at Yale.
4. Must have demonstrated qualities of leadership at Yale.

The Mellon Fellowship will pay directly to Clare College all tuition and college fees, including board and room expenses. Additionally the Mellon Fellow will receive round-trip transportation from their home to Cambridge and a stipend of not less than £15,000 per year, payable in quarterly installments.

Title: Saint Andrew’s Society Graduate Scholarship (Yale PhD)

Since 1960, the Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York has offered two graduate scholarships yearly to promote cultural interchange and goodwill between Scotland and the United States. Saint Andrew’s Scholarships fund one year of study at any of the universities in Scotland.

A Saint Andrew’s Scholarship provides up to $35,000 to cover tuition and related academic expenses and help defray transportation and living expenses.

Special Eligibility Requirements (Yale PhD):

Graduating seniors at Yale who are US citizens and who can describe their Scottish lineage. Preference will be given to students who have not previously studied in the United Kingdom.

Selection for an award is based on the applicant’s record of academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, financial need, clarity of career purpose in pursuing graduate studies, strong reasons for wishing to continue with education–with particular clarity around the graduate study objective(s) to be achieved and why study in Scotland, some Scottish descent, and proof of US citizenship.
