The Research Ethics & Compliance Support (RECS) team at UNSW is tasked with coordinating committees and processes for various research areas involving humans, animals, gene technology, and other specialized fields. They offer expert advice on legislative and other requirements pertinent to these research areas. Their committees include the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC), Human Research Ethics Advisory Panels (HREAPs), Animal Care & Ethics Committees (ACECs), Gene Technology Research Committee (GTRC), and Radiation Safety Committee (RSC). Additionally, RECS manages compliance in other research areas, such as Schedule 8 and 9 substances, drone usage, and biosecurity. A key function of RECS is leading the development of the university’s policy framework for research ethics and compliance.

The Research Assistant role is a vital part of the RECS team, contributing to the Unit’s strategic objectives. This position involves high-level administrative, compliance, and governance support across multiple teams within RECS. The Research Assistant reports to the Human Research Manager and does not have any direct reports.

Requirements

Accountabilities:

  • Executive-level administrative support to the human research manager.
  • Compliance checks of research submissions in line with relevant procedures and regulations.
  • Providing practical support and high-level advice on legislation and guidelines for research involving humans.
  • Maintaining project and governance files as per operational procedures and record-keeping practices.
  • Developing high-level information and guidance materials in collaboration with RECS team members.
  • Supporting the financial management of RECS, including coordinating billing activities.
  • Upholding UNSW’s values, code of conduct, and health and safety policies.

Skills and Experience:

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in research, especially involving humans, and understanding ethical and compliance considerations.
  • Proficiency in committee support and financial and administrative duties.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational, administration, and time management skills.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement within a research environment.
  • Technical proficiency in various computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and video conferencing tools.
  • Commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, values, policies, and health and safety training.
