Born in 1910 in Guildford, England, Child obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen’s University in 1931. After working in the food industry, he returned to academia, earning a Master of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Toronto. Child’s heart belonged to academia, but his business endeavors were central to his life. He ardently believed in devoting his time and resources to his adopted country. A veteran of the Canadian Signal Corps during the Second World War, he was celebrated for his service to Canada’s military and for his outreach to armed forces worldwide. Child was a visionary, always speaking in terms of future horizons. In 1985, he was honored as an officer of the Order of Canada and received honorary degrees from Queen’s University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Calgary.
