Summary:

The Department offers a unique international PhD position at the Research Center STC (Sensible Things that Communicate) in collaboration with the University of L’Aquila, Italy, and industry partner LumenRadio, Sweden. The focus of this position is on developing advanced medium access and scheduling schemes for wireless networks to achieve reliable and predictable performance. The research involves applying statistical learning, machine learning, and reliability theory to understand radio network dynamics. This is part of ongoing projects to enhance deterministic performance in wireless IoT standards across various industries. The program grants a double degree from Mid Sweden University and the University of L’Aquila, enhancing the candidate’s international research network and career prospects. The candidate will spend the first year at the University of L’Aquila and the following three years at Mid Sweden University, with research visits to Univaq. The role involves collaboration with international research groups and industry partners, offering both academic and industrial experience.

Requirements

Candidates must meet the entry requirements for Mid Sweden University’s third-cycle programme. This includes having a second-cycle degree or completing 240 ECTS credits, with at least 60 credits in second-cycle courses. Specifically, 90 credits should be in Computer Engineering or Computer and Information Engineering. Equivalent knowledge acquired in other ways is also considered. A Master’s degree in wireless communication, electrical engineering, signal processing, computer engineering, or engineering physics is preferred. The selection process considers the candidate’s academic work, advanced-level courses, and performance in interviews. Key skills include a strong background in wireless communication, mathematics, optimization, signal processing, and programming. Experience in communication systems, machine learning, real-time embedded systems, and programming in C/C++, or Python is advantageous. Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory. Personal qualities such as teamwork, initiative, and suitability for doctoral studies are important. Applicants should include a brief description of their vision and goals in their application.
