Summary:

Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) is offering a research fellow position (PhD) in the field of advanced computational methods for treatment verification in proton therapy. This position is part of the Horizon Europe project “NOVO: Next generation imaging for real-time dose verification enabling adaptive proton therapy.” The successful candidate will join an international team specializing in proton therapy, computer science, applied mathematics, detector physics, and medical physics.

The project focuses on developing real-time dose verification technology in proton therapy to improve cancer treatment precision and quality of life. The PhD candidate will contribute to Work Packages 2 (Image reconstruction & AI-enhanced modelling) and 3 (Dose reconstruction in clinical settings), developing advanced technologies in these areas. They will be working with international experts in AI, image reconstruction, and proton therapy.

Additionally, the candidate will engage in the vibrant computer science research environment at HVL, which emphasizes applied research and ICT as an enabling technology. They will collaborate with national and international researchers and industry partners, contributing significantly to health, innovation, and technology intersections.

Requirements:

  • Educational Background: A master’s degree in computer science, applied radiation, nuclear/medical physics, AI and machine learning, applied mathematics, or a closely related field. Candidates who have submitted their master’s thesis are also eligible, provided they obtain their degree within four weeks of the application deadline.
  • Skills and Experience: Proficiency in Monte Carlo radiation transport calculations, advanced programming, AI, and machine learning techniques. Prior research and teaching experience, practical software engineering skills, and publications are advantageous.
  • Research and Publication: The ability to conduct high-quality research and publish results in international workshops, conferences, and journals.
  • PhD Programme Enrollment: Mandatory enrolment in the PhD programme in Computer Science at HVL within 3 months of employment start.
  • Duration and Commitment: A 3-year position with a possible extension to 4 years, including teaching and other relevant work at HVL.
  • Additional Qualifications: Strong academic records, excellent master’s thesis (grade B or better in the ECTS grading system), and potential research plan for the PhD project. The ability to work independently and collaboratively, with regular guidance.
