The Archaea Research Group within the Department of Biology – Microbiology explores the ecophysiology and metabolism of deep-sea Archaea involved in the anaerobic oxidation of volatile alkanes such as ethane, propane, and butane. Volatile alkanes constitute significant components of natural gas, exerting a substantial impact on the carbon and energetic dynamics of deep-sea marine sediments. In this project, the goal is to unravel the biochemical mechanism underlying alkane functionalization and its subsequent integration into central metabolic pathways, including the identification of associated genes and enzymes. To achieve these objectives, candidates will conduct physiological assays, perform incubations using stable isotope-labeled substrates and precursors, and engage in comparative metabolomics. Experiments will encompass cultures, concentrated cell suspensions, and cell extracts. Metabolomics analyses will be supplemented with comparative genomics and proteomics to reconstruct metabolic pathways. Title: Quantum Simulation with Ultracold Atoms (R-QSUA)

The research group focuses on creating and exploring atomic clouds approaching absolute zero temperature. At such frigid conditions, they give rise to exceptionally pure quantum systems known as Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs). These BECs enable the investigation of quantum mechanics in complex many-particle systems with unprecedented precision, a process known as quantum simulation. The group’s recent work has utilized BECs of potassium atoms to simulate the behavior of electrons in a solid, particularly electron-phonon interactions resulting in a state called a polaron. By introducing a few impurity atoms into a BEC, they effectively emulate this inaccessible quantum system within a controlled experimental setup. Future experiments aim to explore interactions between polarons mediated by the surrounding condensate and to study moving polarons at different velocities.
