The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF)
The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) is a synchrotron radiation facility located in Grenoble, France. The esrf was established in 1989 and it has been operating since 1994. It is the first of its kind to be built outside of the United States and Japan. The main purpose of the esrf is to provide high-quality beams for research purposes and produce new knowledge in various fields such as physics, chemistry, biology and medicine.
The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) is the world’s largest and most powerful synchrotron radiation facility. The ESRF was first proposed in 1984, with the goal of creating a laboratory for research into condensed matter physics, material science, life sciences and other areas of science that require intense beams of electromagnetic radiation.
The ESRF has two experimental areas: one for research and one for production. The experimental area for research includes laboratories that focus on quantum optics, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI

Position Title: Microstructure and texture analysis of x-ray diffraction data using Machine Learning (PhD student W/M)
Deadline: Open Until Filled
Contract type: Time-limited contract
Contract duration: Time-limited contract
Candidates will join a collaborative project between the ID03 and Algorithms & Scientific Data Analysis (ADA) teams at the ESRF. The focus is on studying the microstructure and texture of engineering materials undergoing plastic deformation, leading to defects such as dislocations and work-hardening. The role involves leveraging Dark Field X-ray Microscopy (DFXM) for in-situ and 3D microstructure analysis.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing machine learning techniques to identify and characterize large-scale dislocation structures, like low-angle grain boundaries.
- Segmenting 3D orientation maps acquired with DFXM into cells and subgrains.
- Classifying boundaries between these structures based on various factors like orientation change and cell size.
- Setting up and evaluating machine learning models.
This project aims to automate DFXM data analysis workflows, enhancing accessibility for non-expert users and broadening its application in scientific and industrial communities. All tasks will be conducted in close collaboration with the ESRF Dark-Field X-ray Microscopy beamline ID03.
Requirements
Educational and Professional Experience:
- A degree suitable for PhD enrolment (MSc, Master 2 de Recherche, Laurea, or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, computational science, or a related field.
Technical Skills:
- Experience with computational chemistry/physics software.
- Proficiency in a modern programming language (preferably Python) and familiarity with machine learning techniques.
Language and Compliance:
- Proficiency in English, the working language at ESRF.
- Adherence to the Marie Sklodowska-Curie mobility rule: Candidates must not have resided or primarily worked/studied in France for more than twelve months in the three years preceding recruitment.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) within the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and who have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree.
