Summary:

Solar radiation management through stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) is proposed as an interim measure to mitigate climate warming, albeit with significant concerns regarding its impact on the stratospheric ozone layer. Within an international, interdisciplinary initiative, researchers will utilize in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) at the Swiss Light Source at PSI and elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) at the Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics at ETH Zurich to investigate the behavior of solid particles earmarked for SAI when exposed to trace gases under stratospheric conditions. The role entails quantifying both surface and bulk chemical conversions of these particles and collaborating with modeling teams within the project consortium to incorporate findings into large-scale atmospheric chemistry models. The position is for a PhD candidate enrolled at ETH Zürich.

Requirements:

Prospective candidates should hold a master’s degree or its equivalent in physical chemistry, environmental chemistry, or material science. To enhance our efforts in hydrothermal biomass conversion, we seek a Postdoctoral Fellow to focus on Catalytic Hydrothermal Gasification (CHG) for renewable hydrogen production. This role involves conducting research on selective hydrogen production through CHG within the Horizon Europe project “Bioctane,” in collaboration with international academic and industrial partners. Responsibilities include designing, preparing, and characterizing various catalysts for (near) supercritical water gasification of organic residues, with a focus on hydrogen selectivity. Utilizing state-of-the-art analyses such as XRD, physi-/chemisorption, SEM, and TEM will be essential.
