Application Process

At the first step of Applying you should choose your study subject and a university. Before your final desition, you can check the rank of the university and the city of the university because the cost of living is very different in various cities. For instance, the cost of living in a small city in East of Germany is cheaper than a big city in the west. In Germany, there are a lot of universities and study programs accessible for international students including lots of different study subjects.

What are the admission requirements of a Bachelor degree in Germany?

In Germany, the application for a study program in a university can have one of the following forms:

Directly

The students directly send their application in the dedicated website/email provided by the host faculty of the university. Particularly, in this case, the application fee is free of charge. In the central system (Uni-assis)

The second type of application to study programs is to send the application to the central system. It is the Uni-assist web portal. It should be noted that this process price is around 75 euro and every additional application 15 euro.

special subjects

The third type of application is solely for particular study programs (special subjects) in which the application differs for EU or non-EU citizens. This is the case for the majority of Medicine and Pharmacy programs where the restriction is imposed. Because in this field there is a large number of applicants. In Germany, these subjects are known as “bundesweiter Numerus clausus”. For applying in NC subjects the EU citizen applicants should submit their application to the trust for admission to higher education (application is free of charge). The non-EU citizen should send their application to Uni-assist if their prospect university is a member of uni-assist otherwise the application would be similar to the first case mentioned above. The typical application documents for study programs in Germany includes (but not limited to) the certified translation of university entrance qualification, all university certificates and transcripts, copy of the passport, personal photo and language certificates. For those programs that the admission is done through Uni-assist, the application period for the winter semester is from the 30th of May to the 15th of July and For the summer semester, it is from the 1st of December to the 15th of January. But for the programs that are not centralized through Uni-assist, the application deadline does not follow special rules (details of each particular program has to be found on the website of that program).

How to apply to study in Germany (The German programs)?

In order to apply for any study program in German, you should have a German proficiency certificate, either a DSH or TestDaF. There are two possibilities:

  1. You just take German language courses in your home country and get the required certificates before application (Goethe institute in your home country can be the best option to learn and take the German test).
  2. If you just reached the basic level of German (known as B1), you can apply for universities and get admission for the German course language program of the host university through Uni-assist. In the majority of the German university, this option is for free. That means you will be admitted to the university to learn German for 2-4 semesters. Then, you will take the required German test in order to be eligible to enter university.

How to apply to study in English (The English programs)?

If you have an English language certificate such a TOEFL, IELTS, you can apply for several English study program in many German universities. Not very surprisingly, there is plenty of German study program for everybody provided that you have got very good German language proficiency (TestDaF, DSH). The procedure for German study program is different and all the application should be done through Uni-assist (follow the link to Uni-assist website).

You should take into account that Non-EU and non-EEA international students should apply for a Student Visa and need to have financial support (a minimum of €8,640 in a blocked bank account) for Visa to handle the cost of studying and living.

Academic Year

The academic year (first of October till 30th of September) in Germany consists of two semesters Winter semester (first of October till the end of March) and Summer semester (first of April till the end of September).
