The Amazon Future Engineer Bursary stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity, especially for young women aspiring to make their mark in the fields of engineering and computer science. In a world where these fields are still grappling with gender imbalances and economic barriers, this initiative by Amazon aims to bridge gaps and create a more inclusive future.

The Bursary’s Essence

The bursary is not just a financial aid package; it’s a commitment towards fostering talent and helping dreams materialize into reality. It provides up to £20,000 (£5,000/year) for pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering or computer science at UK universities. This financial support is specifically tailored to aid women A-level and BTEC/OCR (or Scottish equivalent) students from low-income households.

Aim

The core objective of the Amazon Future Engineer Bursary is to tackle the underrepresentation of women in computer science and engineering sectors. By offering substantial financial support, Amazon aims to accelerate the rate of progress in these fields, making them more accessible and diverse.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this transformative opportunity, applicants must:

  • Be female.
  • Be studying relevant A-Levels, Scottish Highers, or a full-time technical course.
  • Have received a university offer for an eligible course in the UK.
  • Be a UK resident with ‘home’ fee rate eligibility.
  • Be enrolling in a UK university for the upcoming academic year.
  • Have been eligible for free school meals or have a parent/guardian on state benefits.

Application Timeline

The application window opens on November 1st, 2023, and closes on May 7th, 2024. This period provides ample time for students to prepare and submit their applications.

Value

Each successful applicant receives a financial support package of £5,000 annually for up to four years. This package is designed to cover a range of university-related expenses, including tuition fees, accommodation, and living costs, amounting to a maximum of £20,000. The continuation of the award depends on the student’s enrollment status and academic performance.

The bursary goes beyond financial assistance. Awardees gain exclusive access to networking opportunities, mentorship programs, and community groups. These platforms provide a space to meet inspiring role models, engage with peers facing similar challenges, and explore collaborative projects, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
